Shapiro Didway is committed to environmental sustainability. Our internal processes are designed to reduce our natural resources impact, both in how we run our business and the work that we create.

Columbia Tech Center is situated on 410 acres. The center has a mixture of office, multi-family housing, flex/industrial, medical and retail. To guide future development and ensure a walkable, connected community, Shapiro Didway collaborated with the center to developed a pedestrian and bicycle network Master Plan for the campus and to establish implementation standards for trail components. Existing conditions data was collected (i.e. vegetation, site amenities, design precedents, etc.) and analyzed for potential trail routes, nodes and crossings.

It’s our policy to recommend native and climate adaptive, drought tolerant plant species. We strive to use locally made products, new technologies that mitigate environmental impacts and the reuse of site materials whenever possible.

SD was brought on to design a community courtyard for REACH CDC’s Wy’East Plaza affordable housing apartments located at 124th and Ash in East Portland. With the goal of creating a sustainable space that makes all residents feel welcome, we included accessible raised planters, versatile seating, and a rain barrel for harvesting storm water. Once completed, residents will have access to community gardens, sheltered bike parking and outdoor seating for both gathering and solitude.

Jessel has over 15 years of experience as a landscape architect designing award-winning public improvement, parks & recreation, and nature play projects across the west and east coasts. She excels at working with interdisciplinary teams, jurisdictions, stakeholders, and the public to identify priorities and meet project goals. She specializes in community-driven work and community outreach, and recently facilitated public outreach events for municipalities including the City of Tualatin, the City of Bay City, as well as Lincoln City Cultural Center to successfully develop updated master plans to generate funding and address community needs.
